The first draft of anything is rarely worth showing to another person, and writers who understand this produce more work than writers who expect every sentence to arrive finished. The useful habit is to separate the act of producing from the act of judging, because they use different kinds of attention and doing both at once slows each of them down.

Pasting is disabled — the whole point is to measure your typing.

Words per minute divides characters by five, the average English word length, so it is only meaningful for Latin-script passages and is hidden otherwise. Characters per minute is comparable across every language.

About this tool

Copy a passage as accurately as you can and watch your speed and accuracy build in real time. The clock starts on your first keystroke rather than when the page loads, so the time you spend reading first does not count against you. Results are reported as characters per minute plus words per minute, and errors are counted per character so a single dropped letter shows up.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose one of the three passages.
  2. 2Start typing in the box below — the timer starts on your first keystroke.
  3. 3Read your characters per minute, accuracy and error count, then hit restart to try again.

Frequently asked questions

Why is words per minute not shown for some passages?

Because the words-per-minute formula divides characters by five, which is the average English word length. A Chinese or Japanese passage typed at the same real speed would show a nonsensical figure, so for those passages only characters per minute is reported. Characters per minute is the honest measure for every language.

Can I paste the text instead of typing it?

No, pasting is blocked. This is not a security measure, it is the whole point of a typing test — pasting a perfect copy would report a perfect score at zero errors, which tells you nothing. Blocking that one action is what makes the numbers meaningful.

What counts as an error?

Every character position where what you typed differs from the passage, including characters typed past the end. Accuracy is correct characters divided by characters typed, so fixing a mistake does not erase it from the count — the count is over what you have produced so far, which is what a real accuracy figure measures.
