About this tool
Convert plain text to Base64 and back again, including full UTF-8 support so accented characters, Chinese, Japanese and emoji survive the round trip. You can also encode files and URLs directly, and decoding happens entirely in your browser.
How to use it
- 1Choose Encode to turn text into Base64, or Decode for the opposite direction.
- 2Paste your text, or switch to the file tab to encode a file's raw bytes.
- 3Copy the result or download it as a text file.
Frequently asked questions
Why does plain btoa() fail on my text?
The browser's built-in btoa() only accepts Latin-1 characters and throws on anything else. This tool encodes the string as UTF-8 bytes first, so any language or emoji works correctly.
Is Base64 a form of encryption?
No. Base64 is only a way of representing bytes as text — it hides nothing and provides no security. Anyone can decode it instantly, so never use it to protect passwords or private data.
Does it work with URLs?
Yes. The URL-safe variant replaces + and / with - and _ and removes padding, which is the form required when Base64 appears inside a URL or a filename.
