About this tool
Hash text or a whole file with MD5 or the SHA family, and generate UUIDs when you need identifiers. Everything is calculated in your browser, which matters for hashes: a checksum is usually meant to verify that a file arrived unchanged, so sending the file to a server to hash it defeats the purpose.
How to use it
- 1Choose whether to hash text or a file.
- 2Run it and read the values for all five algorithms at once.
- 3Switch to the UUID tab to generate v4 or v7 identifiers.
Frequently asked questions
Why is MD5 still offered when it is broken?
Because it remains in wide use for non-security purposes: many download pages, CDNs and build tools still publish MD5 checksums, and you need MD5 to verify them. It is genuinely unsafe against a deliberate attacker who can craft a colliding file, so never use it for signatures or passwords.
What is the difference between UUID v4 and v7?
Version 4 is entirely random. Version 7 starts with a millisecond timestamp followed by random bits, which makes the values sort in the order they were created. For a database primary key that means new rows append to the end of the index instead of scattering across it, which keeps inserts fast.
Are the generated UUIDs really unique?
They come from the browser's cryptographic random source, which is the same quality of randomness used for encryption keys. At version 4, you would need to generate about a trillion UUIDs before the chance of a single collision reached one in a billion — in practice, effectively never.
